Homemade Almond Milk

As I am stuck at home for a little while  (due to being unwell), I have a lot of free time. I am one of those who gets easily bored staying at home all day... Therefore, I decided to use that time to do plenty of cooking and baking! There are so many recipes I have been wanting to try for such a long time but I never really had the time.

Here is a delicious recipe to make your own almond milk. It is very easy to make and is a nice change to soy milk and rice milk!

                             Almond Milk

1 cup of raw almonds (soaked for about 4-8 hours)
4 cups of cold water
A pinch of sea salt
1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
3 tablespoon of maple syrup OR agave nectar

  • In a blender (or a smoothie machine like I have), blend the soaked almonds, water, and sea salt at medium speed and then at high speed until it is smooth.
  • Pour through a strainer to separate pulp.
  • Pour liquid back in the the blender and add the vanilla extract and maple syrup or agave nectar. Blend until it is smooth.

As a vegan, I believe humans shouldn't drink milk from a cow or from any other animals. After all, we are the only specie drinking milk from other species and we do so despite the bad effects it has on our health.
If you are interested, read the following article: Cow's milk is the perfect food for baby calves but many doctors agree: It is not healthy for humans by Michael Dye

Though, even if you are not a vegan, you should give this recipe a try as it is as delicious as it is easy to make!

  1. I'm a big fan of both rice and almond milk. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I would never have thought to make my own almond milk -- now I can't wait :)

Although I know how unhealthy cow's milk is, I still continue to consume it and products made from it. I do make an effort to limit my intake, though.

  3. Being an older vegetarian it would behoove me to use a blender or smoothie nmachine such as the one you use. Though i am presently and ovo-lacto vegetarian who eats an number of vegan meals, i'm getting more and more lactose intolerant. i also suspect that cows are not all fed an organic diet and may have other things injected into them for increased milk production in addition to having built up pesticides and toxins in their fat. I also seem to recall reading that constant low level consumption of residual antibiotics could enable diseases to become resistant to them.
Soy milk, rice milk, and almond milk are things I should try out. They would probably reduce the need for my taking Red Yeast Rice (same active ingredient as Lipitor). i will have to be careful to remove the red coating on the almonds as i have an allergy to that, but not to the almonds themselves.
Just how ambitious of a cook are you? i once got a huge cookbook full of recipes for Indian cuisine, but i'm so lazy. i never made ghee, which is related to clarified butter. Do you think it would be possible to make a vegan ghee using soy, rice, or almond milk to start with?
The sea salt, vanilla extract and maple syrup in the recipe sound good.

  4. I baby-sit for a vegan family and have to say that the soymik just doesn't do it for me -- maybe I'll like this better!
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and for your sweet comment! Yours is lovely; I can't wait for more.
